It has been shown that despite its antioxidant properties, ascorbic acid 6-palmitate promotes LPO, JNK activation and cytotoxicity following UVB irradiation. Ascorbic acid 6-palmitate effectively inhibited anthrax cytotoxic protease and blocks proteolytic activities of host furin, cathepsin B and caspases that mediate toxin's lethality in cells. It is broad-spectrum and reduces cellular sensitivity to other bacterial toxins that require the same host proteases.
