Product Description
Narcissus pseudonarcissus lectin (NPL/NPA) is isolated from wild daffodils. The lectin is composed of four subunits and has a molecular weight of 59,000 Da. NPL agglutinates rabbit erythrocytes but is non-reactive with human erythrocytes.
Narcissus pseudonarcissus lectin has isoelectric points of pH 4.2 - 4.6 and a specific binding activity toward α-D-mannose, although studies have suggested that the purified lectin may have greater affinity for internal mannosyl residues than for nonreducing terminal units. A buffer washed column elutes a concentration of 0.2M of α-methylmannoside.
Human studies have found NPA to be nearly non-mitogenic, but it has been reported through an in vitro study that mitogenicity of NPA is age-related, with lymphoproliferative response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in umbilical cord blood has a sevenfold increase than adult blood. NPA has also been found to be mitogenic for PBMC from lambs and not adult sheep.
This product comes in a lyophilized powder form and is stable for more than five years from production date when stored below -20 C. No metal ions are required for binding.
Applications:
Mitogenic studies of human lymphocytes
Agglutination studies
Characterization on early stages of apoptosis
